Vandals target parked cars Residents are worried car vandals are targeting Halswell. The vandalism follows a spate of damage to cars in Cashmere, Somerfield and St Martins. One resident said her car was parked overnight on Wales St when three cars within 500m of each other all had their windows smashed and wing mirrors broken. Most of the vandalism has happened in the early hours of Saturday or Sunday mornings, while the cars have been parked on the street. The woman, who asked not to be named, said she knew of other residents further along the street who had also been subject to the same attacks.

The group worked out the incident had happened between the hours of midnight and 2am. “I fear for other people’s cars,” she said. She said she felt violated by the actions. “It’s the inconvenience and frustration that really gets me,” she said. The two community watch groups that patrolled the Halswell area were unaware of the vandalism. Christchurch South Community Watch chairman David Scott said he had not been alerted. “We’re not getting that information. We need to get the police to give us more information when it comes in,” he said. •Turn to page 5

Christmas is on its way and the carollers are gathering. Cecilian Singers music director Rosemary Allison says in post-earthquake Christchurch, it has become difficult to attract audiences. Mrs Allison said the arts play an important role in the rebuild, and the group plan to revive carols for the city. The next concert for the Cecilian Singers would be on Sunday, November 30. The show, titled Christmas Cheer, would include Christmas music and a range of music from other genres. Christchurch pianist and composer Matthew Everingham

Residents in Lightbody Lane, Wigram, were concerned the lack of distance between the location of the bus stop and the front of the house would create invasion of privacy and lack of parking space. At a community board meeting on November 18 staff decided to work on finding another location for the intended bus stop adjoining the property. Community board chairman Mike Mora said the board would be holding more negotiations with residents to find an acceptable solution.

customer parking access. “We’re a busy workplace environment with multiple customer entries. When the road is busy the queue already backs up halfway down the road – when you get buses into it, it will be even more difficult,” he said. City council road corridor operations manager Paul Burden said the changes would not impact access to the car dealership. They said the bus stop is on the departure side of their access, their customer parking is on their land and any overflow will just have to park further down street.

Suspicious shed fire

Volunteer awards

Mayor Lianne Dalziel will present Civic Awards to 13 community-minded individuals and organisations on December 10 at a special ceremony. The awards recognise individuals and groups whose voluntary work has made the city a better place to live. It would be the first ceremony since 2010. Awards would be presented to Tim Jenkins of Upper Riccarton for environmental education and community service and Dr Brian Molloy of Riccarton for contributions to environmental conservation.

A suspicious fire destroyed a shed and neighbouring fence in Huia St on Monday. Fire Service southern communications spokesman Andrew Norris said four crews were called to the fire in Upper Riccarton. Fire risk management officer Bruce Irvine said police had investigated the possibility of arson but did not believe it to be the probable cause. He said the fire had been treated as suspicious but the cause was hard to determine.

Silence over quarry plan BY GRACE CABELL

Residents are furious with a lack of communication from Fulton Hogan over a proposed quarry site in Islington. A consent application has been lodged for a 19.5ha quarry on Roberts Rd directly beside a number of residential dwellings. But Yaldhurst Rural Residents Association chairman Bob Cross said he believed it was part of the company’s strategy not to publicly notify the application. The Western News approached Fulton Hogan in Christchurch to find out why the consent process was not publicly notified. The company, which plays a major part in the city’s rebuild, did not

3

respond. The Western News was then redirected to Fulton Hogan’s head office in Australia. “Fulton Hogan does not comment on its resources operations and as such is unable to make a person available to you,” said group communications manager Georgia Allen. Mr Cross said he was not surprised with the lack of response. “Fulton Hogan is trying to keep out of the public eye because it is bad publicity. So it’s no wonder they don’t want the press involved,” he said. Residents are now calling for Government action to deter the quarrying activity. Last week more than 100 people protested at the site on Roberts Rd. It was the second protest resi-

dents had held in attempts to fold activity on the site. As a result of the meeting a formal deputation to council would headed by Selwyn MP Amy Adams. “It is unlikely it will be rescinded but people are so angry they want council to hear about it,” said Riccarton-Wigram Community Board deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton. “It’s on – that’s all we can say,” community board chairman Mike Mora. Mrs Broughton said the deeper issue of delegations to commissioners also needed to be reviewed. “The city council has delegated the decision making to the commissioners – they need to have a good hard look at it, especially where there is huge public interest,”

she said. She said it was not right a noncomplying activity could be nonnotified. “I have never moved a notice of motion to the community board to give a formal request for public notification before,” she said. Mr Cross said the worst thing was not being able to control the mitigation. “As far as council processes have gone through the commissioners they have done it technically right – but they had other options they just didn’t use,” he said. “You’ve got to feel for the residents in that area, I can just think of that wind yesterday that would have blown the wind every were,” he said.

Project co-ordinator turns AMAZING: Tracey Saunders (Aaralyn) of TribalDiva Belly Dance Company will dance in Christmas in the Park this Saturday.

Project co-ordinator by day and belly dancer by night, Tracey Saunders is preparing to dance in the Coca Cola Christmas in the Park on Saturday (Nov 29). Reporter Grace Cabell speaks to her about how she became involved in belly dancing and where it has taken her so far. Tracey, tell me a bit about you, are you Christchurch born and bred? No, I lived a little bit further south as a child and moved to Christchurch as a teenager. Now I live in Bryndwr. Where did you go to school? I went to Linwood College. Then I did a Bachelor of Education at Canterbury University, and then a graduate diploma in project management at CPIT. But that was when I came back to New Zealand after being overseas for 10 years, working and adventuring. How did you become involved in belly dancing? I didn’t start dancing until I got back to New Zealand. My old flatmate in London sent a video of her performing, and then I just knew it was what I wanted to do. How long have you been belly dancing? Just over five years. I started at the School of Contemporary Belly Dance, which has closed down now. TribalDiva took over the running of it and now I run that. The school dwindled after the earthquake and we lost our prem-

ises. The whole thing was run by committee – it was really draining at the time. How long have you been involved in the TribalDiva group? I’ve been involved since I began belly dancing. The school was an incorporated society which meant you needed a committee and a certain number of annual members. It was just becoming really hard to maintain. Now we run it as more of a business and you don’t need a membership. Is this your full-time job? No, it’s a part-time job. I’ve been working as a construction project co-ordinator at Unity Construction for the past four months. Before that I was a project coordinator for a software company. It really is a total contrast. For those out there who may not know much about it, what

are the main aspects of belly dancing? Well we have tribal fusion and tribal belly dance which are both modern styles of belly dance. They retain a lot of the original aesthetics of traditional belly dancing but incorporate a lot of new stuff as well. We have music and costumes and add in a bit of hip hop and flamenco as well. It’s really fun. Where does the dance originate from? Tribal belly dance and tribal fusion originate from the United States. It comes from the San Francisco area around the 1970s. So how did you get involved in the Christmas in the Park event, is this the first time your group has been involved? This is our third year doing it and it’s heaps of fun. We have a group of eight dancers this year. We were approached to be involved. The first year we were asked they were having belly dancers in Auckland and wanted some in Christchurch too. Is there anything new for audiences at Christmas in the Park? The dancers are all new. We’re using the same props as last year – we have huge isis wings which will fill up the whole stage. How many hours of training have you been putting in? A lot – a good amount. I normally dance about 15 hours a week. How many people are involved in TribalDiva?

dance diva at night

There is probably up to about 40 people spread across all the classes and we have between eight to 10 classes depending on the term. Do you have a range of dancers involved? Oh definitely. I currently only have one male student but we definitely do welcome male students. And age is no barrier. We have a huge age span, from about 17 through to 70. Have you noticed a growth in interest since you opened? Yes definitely. I think since we are operating as TribalDiva we have been doing a lot of public gigs and taking it out to places you wouldn’t normally see it, and

that is what has started it up for a lot of new people. Where have you performed in New Zealand? I performed in Wellington at the start of this month for a friend’s concert and in Dunedin earlier this year. I’ve performed lots in Dunedin, Wellington and Auckland. Where is your favourite place in New Zealand to perform? In New Zealand I really like performing at outdoor gigs. Have you had anything crazy happen to you while performing? Oh yeah. There’s been a few crazy things. Often at outdoor gigs you get kids and dogs wander

CHANGE: Saunders works as construction project co-ordinator by day. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN into your performances. I dance at Topkapi Turkish Restaurant most weekends – that’s always fun, you get people up dancing who are more enthusiastic than you would think. Have you done anything for it overseas? I went over to Los Angeles earlier this year for an intensive training session. It was 59 hours of training with people who in our opinion are the superstars of tribal fusion. What was that experience like? The people who were teaching us are like celebrities to us. It was overwhelming, it took a day or two before I could really start absorb-

ing it. I definitely learnt a lot there. What has been your favourite place to perform over all? I performed in Las Vegas. That was probably the coolest so far. It was in a really funky old casino that looked like it was out of the film Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. It was the old downtown Las Vegas, not the new flashy area, so it was really cool. What kind of reactions do you get from your audiences? In New Zealand it’s a really mixed bag. Sometimes you get people who are really enthusiastic and sometimes you get crowds who are really reserved. They look like they’re not quite sure what we are doing – New Zealand as an audience is pretty reserved. Do you have a family? I have a partner. Does he ever get involved in the dancing? He comes along sometimes to do sound checks for us. I’ve tested out the odd new move on him. If I can explain it to him and he understands it then I can be sure the students can do it. What do you like the most about belly dancing? There is a real community spirit to belly dancing, you need to work together. I enjoy the costumes and getting dressed up. For me I just love performing. Great! Is there anything else you want to say? Just that if anyone wants to come and join in on a class they are totally welcome to.

•From page 1 Hornby Community Patrol secretary Ann Smith said she had not been alerted of any car vandalism in Halswell but had been having issues with graffiti on car windows in Hei Hei. Senior Sergeant Philip Dean said cameras were an option if a street was being regularly targeted. “We would urge people to contact us because it does create a pattern and builds up a trend, and then there is a good likelihood that we can catch them somewhere along the line.” He recommended that residents park their cars near streetlights or off the street if possible, and report any suspicious activity.

Students at Burnside High School have received multiple commendations from judges in the Orion Health 2014 Codeworx competition. Two individuals and one team entry from Burnside received highly commended rankings. The Codeworx competition was an initiative run by eHealth software company Orion Health. Secondary school students were required to create a project using a Raspberry Pi (a credit card-sized computer used in electronics projects) to solve a real world problem or one for use in everyday life. Burnside High School student Nathan James was awarded a highly commended ranking by judges with his device. The device allowed people to easily calculate the cost of bulk bin selections before they are dispensed. Fellow Burnside student Tom Wright also received a highly commended ranking for his coding project. Tom’s project was to turn his cellphone into an automated and secure door opener, removing the need to carry around a swipe card. A group of students from the school also developed a device which monitored the terrain safety levels while riding a quad bike. The man responsible for the students’ enthusiasm was

HAT-TRICK: The Christchurch Boys’ High School cricket 1st XI who are aiming for a third national title in as many years.

Looking for a third win BY KYLE KNOWLES Christchurch Boys’ High School is looking to make it a hat-trick of national titles after qualifying for cricekt’s Gillette Cup. In the last 10 years the school has won the tournament six times and that is an impressive record that coach Mark Lane wants to add to in 2014. Lane said the side was quietly confident heading into the Canterbury final against Christ’s College on Show Day which CBHS won by 14 runs and they will take that approach into the national finals. “I think within the team we are confident, we are all about how we want to perform, we don’t look at the opposition. We really focus on what we want to achieve and standards we want to meet,” he said. Lane said the pitches at Lincoln will be good and the games will be won with the bat rather than the ball.

The top three of Daniel Stanley, Joseph Williams and Ryan Jones will be crucial to their success, Lane said. In particular the opening pair of Daniel and Joseph have been performing well and will look to take that form into the finals, he said. Lane said the side has been lead well by captain Morgan Jeffery this season and he has a major role to play in the side’s success. “He has kind of come into the role since term one. He thinks on his feet and has been making some good decisions on the field. He’s going to be a real key for us.” The other five schools at the tournament are King’s College from Auckland, Nelson College, Hutt International Boys’ School, King’s High School from Dunedin and Hamilton’s St Paul’s Collegiate School. CBHS’s first game is against St Paul’s at Lincoln Green on December 8.

Petrol is so Last Century Ao Tawhiti Unlimited Discovery Burnside High School

A

small team of enthusiastic students from Ao Tawhiti Unlimited Discovery is proud to be representatives of their school for the EVolocity High School Competition coming up on November 30, where these young people will showcase an electric vehicle that they have designed and built from the ground up. The project, which they have been working on since early in the year, has not been without its challenges. They have had to learn design and engineering processes, construct the vehicle, test it and refine it. In the spirit of the competition, this project has seen the students recycle old bicycles and incorporate them with some custom-designed features. During the project’s development students have worked largely independently, but have also connected with a range of key mentors to help guide the project as they went. A particularly proud moment for the team was the development of the steering system. A multitude of factors had to be taken into account, including a slight slant to the vehicle that was included for stability control. Eventually the group settled on a rope and cog system that has been working well and is nice to drive. An added complication for this group is the transient nature of the school in postearthquake Christchurch. Formerly two central city schools, Unlimited Paenga Tawhiti and Discovery 1 have merged into a new school in 2014 and are operating out of two campuses in temporary buildings. Designing and building an electric vehicle with limited space and resources have forced this group to find creative solutions

to a number of issues. Team leader Toby Spanton reflected that having 10 people in a small workspace made clear communication and processes an essential requirement for success. With great teamwork, they were able to overcome all obstacles and deliver a final product that they are all proud of. As an Enviroschool, the team has received generous support from Enviroschools who have provided some funding and mentoring to enable their project to get off the ground, which the team are extremely grateful for. The team would also like to acknowledge the supportive efforts of Jared, Bry and Edward in helping make this project a reality.

urnside High School has relished the challenge of combining engineering, electronics, programming, design and media together in the EVolocity electric motor sport event, culminating in a speedway competition at Ruapuna Raceway in November. The Burnside teams have gone for streamlined and low three-wheeled designs, and have spent hours of time thinking through where to put things, where to source things and where to store things. Michael Perry 13MUB, Sam Churcher 12WWL, Armand LeRoux 12SMPP, Rewi Haar, Crystal Li and Tony Lee 12SMVV make up Team 1; Josh Lowe 12NLOD, Jonathan McKay 13 GVK, Angela Li 10SHRM and Caitlin Penny 11NBYS make up Team 2; and Arron Prattley 11WBFU and Ryan Yardley 11NCHB make up Team 3. The Burnside plan was to order in a prototype cart, thanks to the generous funding by the Burnside High School PTA, that had some steering and gearing preconfigured. The goal was to then modify and develop from there. Michael Perry is

the chief engineer who has built and assembled the trike in Team 1. Jonathan McKay, Josh Lowe and Arron Prattley are the other builders across the school. The bikes eventually arrived and it has been a busy process of development, investigation and a bit of trial and error to get the bikes up to a safe racing level. This is a truly cross departmental activity where the students have had to liaise with staff from physics, engineering, electronics, maths and digital. This is a fantastic opportunity for the school to participate in and has allowed students to experience a ‘blue skies’ project, where they set the specifications and constraints and then realise them. Some students have negotiated this into their subject areas and are able to be assessed against the standards appropriate. The best part of this is where the students get exposure to professionals and push the key competencies of managing self, relating to others, participation and contributing with their communities and thinking.

Countdown helps needy families A supermarket has partnered with The Salvation Army to assist Kiwi families in need. On November 17 Countdown began its annual Christmas Food Rescue Appeal to help the growing number of New Zealanders who have registered for food assistance. Partnering with The Salvation Army, Countdown supermarkets are collecting donations to help meet the increasing need for food parcels around the country at Christmas. The supermarket is encouraging shoppers to help support

17,000 families in need over Christmas by making a food donation in store, or a donation at the checkout. The Salvation Army’s national secretary for social services Major Pamela Waugh said the patterns were changing with New Zealanders who registered for food assistance. “We’re seeing more people who are struggling because of rising living costs. And they need help.” She said in the last three months more than 4000 new families or individuals have

registered for food parcel assistance. “We’ve also seen significant growth in the number of single men who are struggling to make ends meet with costs often associated with issues such as inadequate accommodation,” she said. Countdown’s managing director Dave Chambers said it was one way supermarkets around the country could use their presence in local communities to help improve what could be a stressful time financially for many New Zealanders. “Every little bit collectively

makes a huge difference to families in need, which is why we’re asking New Zealanders to consider adding a little extra purchase, whether it’s a tin or something else non-perishable to their weekly shopping,” said Mr Chambers. Donations could be made in specially-marked trolleys or customers could also make cash donations at the checkout. The most needed foods included pasta and rice, cereal, canned items, sugar, flour, lunch box items and toiletries, hygiene and cleaning products.

THE CAKE WORKSHOP

HARD WORK: A crane lowers a container for the new metal workshop onto the site of the Halswell Menzshed at the St John of God Hauora Trust.

A place for retired men

BY GRACE CABELL

A working shed in Halswell is proving to have mental health benefits for retired men in the area. The Halswell Menzshed was set up 18 months ago to give retired men in the area a place to socialise and an opportunity to help out in the community. Menzshed co-ordinator Roger Spicer said since opening the shed there had been a huge uptake of interest in the area. “They don’t keep away, they like to be here,” he said. The menzshed stands on the earthquakedamaged St John of God Hauora Trust grounds in Halswell. Even though the rest of the area was damaged, the trust’s shed was not so had been donated to the group. “The shed was born out of a desire to meet the needs of some of our men in the community. We’ve felt like many other communities that there was a need for a place for these guys to go,” said Mr Spicer. The menzshed was also expanding with a new metal workshop on the way. Mr Spicer said he hoped to have the workshop area completed early next year.

Fat Freeze machine gets results! The cryolipolysis (Fat Freeze) machine is so effective – you will be amazed by the results.

H

ow does the treatment work? With our treatment, we use a specially designed vacuum to gently draw up the skin area; the automated cooling handles then starts the treatment, which can be programmable, including treatment time. The great thing about this treatment, apart from that it’s simple and really effective, is that it’s designed to be a ‘lunchtime job’, where clients can return to normal activities right afterwards without discomfort and the only tell-tale signs being a flushed skin appearance (on the treated area) for a few hours.

WOW!

50% off first treatment

Research from the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery suggests a loss of 20 to 40 per cent for each treatment (where 20 per cent is the average). After a two-month wait, when you are ready for the next treatment, you can look forward to another 20 per cent and even more being lost. Sometimes one treatment is enough. The technology of using cold to decompose fat cells was pioneered by the president of the Pennsylvania University School of Medicine in America and has since gained FDA approval as well as European CE. Unlike other slimming technologies out there, this one is designed as an alternative to liposuction for areas of localised fat, for example, back rolls, muffin tops, love handles.

Q&A

Can I use this treatment?

Good candidates have bulges in certain areas they want to get rid of. This is not a weight loss solution for people who are obese. The client should always consult with the practioner.

What can I do after the treatment?

Usually we have patients going back to work immediately after the session. Some patients experience redness, tingling or numbness in the treated area, but this is temporary and will resolve completely. For others some bruising and discomfort may occur.

How long until I see results?

After 60 days, 1 treatment

Visible changes occur as quickly as three weeks, while the most dramatic results show after two months. The body will continue to flush out fat cells along with its toxins up to four to six months after treatment.

Are these changes here to stay, or will they disappear? After 40 days, 1 treatment

The affected fat cells will be eliminated. As long as you maintain your weight with your normal diet and exercise, your long-term results should remain stable. Not suitable for people suffering from obesity, cardiac conditions or diabetes.

After 75 days, 1 treatment

MOTORING

Trailhawk lives up to name The Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge conglomerate is certainly getting value out of its 3.2-litre V6 Pentastar engine. It is one of my favourite power plants out of the high profile automotive giant, standing out for its smooth operation, high power outputs and reasonable efficiency. I’ve tested the Pentastar unit in both the Chrysler 300 and Jeep Grand Cherokee. The latest experience with it was in another Jeep product, the Cherokee, the Grand Cherokee’s little brother. A new Cherokee has landed in New Zealand and it arrives in four models, three get the Pentastar unit, the entry-level model – the two-wheel-drive Sport – gets a 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine while a Limited model also has the choice of a four-cylinder, 2-litre diesel. The car this evaluation focuses on is the four-wheel-drive Trailhawk, which tops out the range, the Longitude and Limited models each have the option of two or four-wheel-drive. The range starts at a respectable $39,990 and ends at $65,990 for the Trailhawk in standard form. The Longitude sits at $54,990, the Limited at $61,990. The new Cherokee is bold and brassy, much like the designs you’d expect from the Chrysler group since the 70s, the frontal treatment is unique but well organised with

shapes and curves that make it a standout amongst other SUVs. The inside is much the same, it is quality built with a style that is fresh, modern and simplistic to use and, in the Trailhawk’s case, is loaded with kit which makes it good value for its price. In true Jeep fashion the Trailhawk is an SUV with serious offroad potential. Interestingly, the four-wheeldrive system has been changed from the previous generation model. The new system is labelled Active Drive, an advanced version is fitted to the Trailhawk model. It is a system which essentially sends drive rearwards when needed, so that four-wheel-drive isn’t engaged all of the time. The driver can select 4WD at will through a push-button along with a Selec-Terrain device which adapts the power proportioning system to suit surface type. Not only is the drive system part of the Cherokee’s make up, it has a state-of-the-art transmission, power is directed through a ninespeed automatic gearbox. The constant, seamless flow

Price: Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, $65,990. Dimensions: Length, 4626mm; width, 1904mm; height, 1686mm. Configuration: V6 transverse, four-wheel-drive, 3239cc, 200kW, 316Nm, nine-speed automatic, 1936kg. Performance: 0-100km/h, 8.8sec.

JEEP CHEROKEE TRAILHAWK: A purpose-built sport utility vehicle for both on and off-road. of ratios are ushered in almost without notice and the proximity of the ratios means there are small gaps to fill so that the engine can do what it does best and that is work freely through the rev band. The Pentastar/nine-speed combination has been engineered for perfection, it spreads power in a purposeful manner and doesn’t load the engine, realistic fuel usage benefits are the result. Jeep claims a 10-litre per 100km (28mpg) combined cycle average is possible. I was keen to see if that was achievable and was left with a best score of 11.8/100km (24mpg) which makes me optimistic that would be achievable. They are good figures

considering I like the power flow from the big V6, it is responsive to throttle request and I used its power to usher in quick acceleration frequently. For the record, the Trailhawk can cut out a standstill to 100km/h time of 8.8sec. That’s the result of high power outputs, the 24-valve, quadcammer is rated at 200kW and 316Nm. There is a strong midrange torque spread which reacts decisively to the accelerator, and with the power flows in through the gearbox it’s almost like a continuously variable transmission, the engine always seems to be in the right area to deliver. I didn’t have a lot of time

on testing day to clean up the Trailhawk so I was a little apprehensive about getting it too dirty off-road, but I did tackle a high country hill road that would replicate ski-field access. I can report that the test car was in its element in that situation, there had been a lot of overnight rain and the surface was slick and greasy, yet steerage was precise and I was never fearful that control in the loose would be threatened. There’s little sign of the global SUV market easing, the new Cherokee lands at a time when sales in New Zealand are booming as well. The Trailhawk is a true allrounder, and even though it would be the model I’d be looking at if I was a buyer I’m really keen to try the 2.4-litre model and the 2-litre diesel. I’m hopeful that will happen as sales gain traction.
